How to leave your tributes to Prince Philip in online book of condolence

An online book of condolence has been launched to commemorate the life of His Royal Highness Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh died peacefully on Friday morning at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

The Palace said in a statement: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

From today, members of the public can leave a short message in his honour.

The Duke and the Queen were married for more than 70 years and Philip dedicated decades of his life to royal duty, serving the nation at the monarch's side.

He officially retired from public engagements in the summer of 2017.

It is not the first time that an online book of condolence has been opened following the death of a member of the royal family.

After the death of Princess Diana in 1997 a special page for condolences was attached to a section of Buckingham Palace’s official website.

Online books of condolence were also set up after the deaths of the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret in 2002.
