How to keep your dog calm in thunder and lightning

The Met Office predicts we could be in for some stormy weather across Glasgow today.

After a mixed morning of sunshine and showers, forecasters say our city could be hit by thunder and lightning around lunchtime.

Some people love the odd thunderstorm - for others it's their worst nightmare.

And if you have pets, you may well find them retreating under the sofa out of fear of what's going on.

Thunderstorms could hit around lunchtime in Glasgow

Where the advice is clear for Glaswegians during a thunderstorm - to get indoors - dogs and other domestic pets can become particularly distressed during the weather.

Here's some advice for Glasgow dog owners:

The best thing to do is stay calm yourself - dogs tend to react to your emotions, therefore if you're stressed during a thunderstorm, they could become stressed too.

Find a safe place for your pooch to settle, ideally away from any light and noise, such as under a table or bed, or even in a comfortable spot in the wardrobe.

Get your dog cosy! Wrap them in a blanket or have them cuddle up to you on the sofa, to reassure them.

Put some loud music on or turn up the television, to try and block the noise of any thunder. If that's not possible, covering your dog's ears might even help.

If you can keep your dog distracted by entertaining them with games, that will help take their mind off any storm!

However, if your dog has felt particularly uneasy in bad weather previously, it's good to talk to your vet about possible medication or even herbal remedies that could help.

Other suggestions include taking your dog for a long walk before a storm and tiring them out, but most importantly, try to keep them comfortable and relaxed!
