How to keep fuel costs down as petrol soars to €2 per litre for first time in Ireland

The price of fuel has been soaring across the world in recent weeks, Ireland being no exception.

One filling station in Dublin hit the shocking price of €2 for one litre of petrol this week.

AA Ireland representatives confirmed the price hike for petrol at the Maxol M3 Mulhuddart service station after it officially reached 200 cent per litre.

The Irish insurance brokers outlined that for every 10c rise, drivers will be forking out an extra €120 each year to run their car.

While the rising costs are worrying, there are some very simple steps drivers can take to save a few euro on fuel.

The AA have some tips for consumers on how to save fuel, save money and cut pollution.

Tyre pressure

Under-inflated tyres will make your car use more fuel. Check your tyre pressure regularly.

Save weight

Extra weight in the car means extra fuel. Empty your car of any heavy items you don't need.

Remove roof-racks

Roof-racks add to your fuel consumption. Take it off when you don't need it.

De-icing

Scrape ice in the winter rather than leaving the car run to warm up

Smooth driving

Drive smoothly and accelerate gently to save unnecessary use of fuel.

Keep rolling

Slow early for traffic lights. Stopping and starting your car uses more fuel than rolling.

Think carefully about your air-con

When driving slowing, air-con increases fuel consumption. If you are driving around town, try opening your windows and save on air-con. However, running the air-con once a week keeps the system in good condition so don't turn it off completely.

Cut down on electrics

Switch off your demister fan, rear window heater and headlights when you don't need them..

Shop around

According to pumps.ie, customers have reported lower prices at three filling stations across the city of Dublin.

As of March 2, the Campus petrol station in East Wall, Dublin 3 is charging just 174.9c per litre of petrol.

Meanwhile, customers noted a cost of 178.9c at Circle K, on South Circular Road, Kilmainham.

As of March 3. motorists logged a cost of 179.9c at the Circle K garages on Kimmage Road Lower.
