How to install Windows 11 on your Mac

While it initially might sound like a crazy idea there are actually a lot of advantages to downloading Microsoft's OS on an Apple-made device.

First of all, Mac OS Catalina is a very good operating system that does a lot of things Windows can't, however, one of its biggest downfalls is gaming.

Mac OS Catalina is incompatible with a lot of games and when you can download them, the operating system doesn't do a good job of prioritising power to the game, meaning it runs so bad that you might as well not bother.

An easy fix to this is downloading Windows OS to your Mac device, something that Apple actually makes very easy to do with built-in software.

In fact, Apple makes it so easy to do this that you can actually have both operating systems on your device, granted it'll take up a lot of storage but the option is there so you only have to use Windows when you need to, the rest of the time you can stick to the original Mac OS.

What you need before you start downloading Windows 11

The main thing you'll need is a Windows 11 ISO file, this is essentially the disc file that will allow you to download the OS onto your Mac.

You'll also need to make sure you have enough space on your Mac device, the ISO file is a hefty five GB so it'll take up a lot of the onboard storage.

Alternatively, you can use an external hard drive connected to your Mac which can ease the burden of storage.

Currently, you can only get the Windows 11 ISO file if you're a part of the Windows Insider Program, otherwise, you can still download Windows 10 on your Mac device

A step-by-step guide to install Windows 10/11 on your Mac device

Apple has its own software to help you download Windows on your Mac called Boot Camp Assistant which comes pre-downloaded on all modern Mac devices.

1. Find Boot Camp Assistant in your Utilities folder and click on it.

2. Use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition- you may be asked to insert a USB which Boot Camp will use to create a bootable drive.

3. Set the size of your Windows partition- this size can't be changed in the future.

4. Once Boot Camp Assistant finishes you're Mac will restart and open the Windows installer- you may have to select the BOOTCAMP partition to format, but this is usually done automatically.

5. You can now install Windows, click next and follow any on-screen instructions.

6. After Windows finishes installing, Boot Camp Installer will open up with a welcome message - follow the onscreen instructions to install Boot Camp on Windows and the necessary Windows drivers.

7. Once finished, your system will restart.

8. If the Boot Camp Installer didn't open automatically, you can do it manually from the BootCamp folder.

9. After your system restarts you can freely use Windows on your Mac device.
