How to hygge as autumn and winter are on the way

With the chilly dark nights rolling in, what could be better than cosying up and adopting the Danish way of hygge - a long standing Danish tradition that symbolises being cosy, comfortable and content. The comforting ritual of making hot drinks is a key part of embracing the hygge feeling.

New to the UK, but a leading brand in Germany since 1974, BEEM coffee machines help you to embrace hygge. The coffee experts at BEEM have revealed their top tips to get you ready for the hygge season:

Quality time

We all know that spending time with our loved ones makes us feel happy and content. But can you remember the last time you sat around with all of your closest friends and enjoyed each other's company? The feeling of happiness and contentment you get when you’re with your nearest and dearest helps you to get into the hygge mood. During the colder months aim to see your closest friends or family at least once a week to keep those good, cosy vibes alive. But remember to honour your alone time and make sure to keep some time to recharge by yourself, maybe grab your favourite book and have a read by the fire.

Get nice and warm

There’s nothing quite like the background glow and noise of a fire burning during the colder months, especially whilst you’re sitting reading a book, however not everyone has a fireplace in their home. For those of us who can’t enjoy a real roaring fire in a cosy living room, try heading to streaming websites such as Youtube and even Netflix for long videos of fires burning to help you get into that warm, snug mood.

Perfect your coffee making skills

Why not spend these precious autumn months perfecting your coffee making skills? Enjoying a freshly brewed mug of coffee in the cold morning is the quintessence of hygge. A coffee machine with a built-in timer, so that you can be greeted in the morning with a lovely warm cup of coffee is a great way to start your day off in comfort. No more rushed mornings trying to get the kettle boiled, and instead enjoy having your coffee ready for you first thing in the morning.

Or if you want to enjoy the ritual of making a coffee, you could opt for a pour over coffee that allows you to make an event out of making a coffee.

Get the candles out

We all love candles, especially for creating that perfect hygge vibe. The soft flickering glow can add a cosy vibe to any room and helps to set the atmosphere for a comfortable evening. For an extra added comforting vibe, try using candles with wooden wicks to have a subtle crackling effect, helping to imitate a real fire. For those with little ones or pets, getting battery operated candles can be a great way to stay safe whilst also embracing the mood of hygge.

Pour yourself a cosy hot chocolate

Hot chocolate is loved by all age groups for good reason - it’s tasty, warming and helps you get in the cosy mood. Try making yours with high quality chocolate powder and using a milk frother to make it feel more luxurious.

The more blankets, the better

When it starts to get cold, there’s nothing better than getting yourself wrapped up in a blanket. Go for chunky knits in neutral colours to make the most of those hygge vibes and have a couple in each room of the house ready to distribute to guests so they can get in on the spirit.
