How to grow flowers and hybrid plants on Animal Crossing

Live your best life in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Picture: Nintendo)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a veritable treasure trove, bursting at the seams with things to do and discover.

Chief among those for a lot of players especially is the ability to breed new types of flowers by either mixing two together or by mixing different colour plants of the same type to make new colours.

Cross-pollinating flowers couldn't be easier, or more fun this time around. Different from previous Animal Crossing games, breeding plants in New Horizons is passive and happens naturally as you place flowers next to each other and water them.

This helpful chart, courtesy of Australian graphic designer Khairul Hamdan, breaks down all the game's flower varieties and how to cross-breed them to your heart's content.

The basic setup for all your flower-breeding needs is simple. All you have to do is get two plants of different colours next to each other, and an empty square where the third flower result can sprout.

Going by this chart, two red cosmos next to each other should result in a black cosmos, while two red pansies will create a purple one.

In terms of how to go about setting up a breeding space for plants, it would be best to lay them out in an X formation.

So you'll have one flower top, left, bottom and right with a gap in the middle for the new flower to spawn.

Results may vary and since New Horizons is continuously growing and evolving itself, this graph might become out of date as time goes on. But for now, it seems to be pretty accurate.

We tried some flower breeding ourselves and it seems that having two white hyacinths next to each other created a beautiful blue hyacinth - which this chart confirms.

If you're looking for plants that aren't on your island, try and look for them on another island. Also if your friends have any different plants to you, chances are you can buy the seeds from their shop. Or just steal them and never breathe a word of it.
