How to give your home a cosy autumnal update

Photographer: Frederick Boukari for styling: Karin Ahlqvist for sale through Historiska Hem

Autumn, the cosiest season of all has arrived, hurrah! There’s no better feeling than being snug and cosy in your own home. As the days grow shorter and the nights become colder, it's important to incorporate comfort into your home.

Adding touches of earthy tones throughout your home, such as rust, mustard, and burnt orange hues, is the perfect way to add warmth while bringing in natural colours from the outdoors. An easy way to do this is to add a natural wool throw to a sofa or earthy ceramics and wooden bowls to your table.

Scented candles are a great way to create a warm ambience throughout your home at this time of year. Updating your home fragrance is a simple way to welcome the new season. Choosing scents with subtle woody undertones such as cedarwood, bergamot and frankincense, is a simple yet effective way of capturing the cosy aroma of autumn. Style a scented candle on a stack of books alongside some vases in a decorative cluster on a mantelpiece or bookshelf and swap fresh flower stems for a bunch of dried flowers and branches to create texture and add character.

Chunky knits, plush velvets and linen textiles are essential to creating a cosy space. Adding wool cushions to your sofa or a throw to the end of your bed will not only create texture but will add comfort to your space. If you want to create an understated contemporary feel, use contrasting materials to build texture, team pale woods, with terracotta tones and mossy greens for a modern feel.
