How to get your Covid booster jab as Scotland rolls out the biggest winter vaccination programme

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed yesterday that the Covid booster vaccination programme is continuing its roll out.

So far, those at high risk from serious illness from Covid-19 and those over 70 years have been offered a booster jag.

And now as we head into winter, the Scottish Government has said they want to 'accelerate' the roll out.

The NHS this winter will be administering four million flu vaccines and three million Covid vaccines in Scotland.

Sturgeon said yesterday that already 1.5 million have been given.

Like the doses of the Covid vaccine, these booster jabs will be rolled out by priority.

Who can get the booster vaccine now?

Those eligible for both a flu vaccine and a coronavirus booster are:

  • those living in residential care homes for older adults
  • frontline health and social care workers
  • all adults aged 50 years or over
  • adults aged 16 to 49 years with underlying health
conditions that put them at higher risk of severe coronavirus
  • adult carers (aged 16 or over)
  • household contacts (aged 16 or over) of immunosuppressed individuals

When can I get the booster vaccine?

The booster dose can be offered any time at least 6 months (24 weeks) after your second dose and will help reduce the risk of you needing to go to hospital due to coronavirus this winter.

If you're eligible, your flu and coronavirus booster vaccines will be given at the same time, one in each arm.

Those with severely weakened immune systems are being offered a third dose top up, which is different and is given out at least eight weeks after the second dose.

Currently those over 70 and high risk are being offered appointments for booster jabs between now and early November.

And it was confirmed by Sturgeon yesterday that all adults over age 50 will get booster appointments through November, December and into early January.

And for younger people, the portal on NHS Inform will open in November to allow them to book an appointment to get the Covid booster jab.

Like with the vaccines, you can access information and when eligible, you can book through NHS Inform website.

How to get your booster jab working in health and social care

According to the NHS Inform website, as an eligible frontline health and social care worker, you can book your coronavirus booster online here.

Eligible healthcare workers and social care workers may receive their flu vaccination with their coronavirus booster vaccine.

What vaccine will I get?

According to NHS Inform: "You will be offered a booster dose of either Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine. AstraZeneca may be given as your booster dose if you have medical reasons that mean you cannot have Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna."
