How to get the most resale value for your vehicle

You only get one chance to make a first impression when you put your car on the market. Now more than ever, buyers arrive armed with MOT apps, car history reports, ULEZ checkers and more. If you prepare properly and understand what matters to buyers right now, you can turn that knowledge into real money.

Get your paperwork sale-ready

Before anyone views the car, sort the admin. A buyer who spots gaps will assume you’ve cut corners elsewhere.

Start with the V5C logbook. Make sure you hold the latest version and that your address matches your current details. If you moved and forgot to update it, correct that through the DVLA first. You can build trust immediately by making sure the address matches your driving licence and the viewing location.

Next, check the MOT. A car with only two months left feels like a risk. If you get a fresh 12-month test and it passes cleanly, you remove a common negotiation tactic. Cars often increase in value simply because the buyer doesn’t face an immediate trip to the test centre.

Service history matters even more now that many brands use digital records. If you need to, log in to the manufacturer portal and print the service log. If not, make sure you have the physical service booklet to hand. A complete history shows you’ve maintained the car properly, which reassures buyers about future reliability.

Use clean air compliance to your advantage

Clean Air Zones are popping up across the country. If your car meets emissions standards, say so clearly in your advert.

You can confirm ULEZ or CAZ compliance using the registration checker online. Stating ‘ULEZ compliant’ with confidence can help to widen your audience to people who live in these zones. That single line could be the difference between three enquiries and ten.

If you’re selling an electric or hybrid model, arrange a battery health report. A battery health certificate gives the next owner clarity on range and long-term performance. And, when a buyer sees that the battery still holds, say, 92% of its original capacity, they’ll hopefully stop worrying about a £5,000 replacement bill and focus on the car itself.

Give it the forecourt look

The Great British weather leaves its mark, especially on alloys and paintwork. Small cosmetic fixes often pay for themselves. An independent vehicle inspection can help to identify areas that need work.

If your wheels show kerb damage, a mobile repair specialist should be able to refurbish each alloy for a reasonable price. Four smart-looking wheels transform how the whole car presents in photos, and buyers often value that improvement more than the repair cost.

Wash, clay and wax the paint so it reflects light properly. In dull conditions, a glossy finish stands out in online listings and encourages clicks. Clear out personal clutter, remove child seats and tidy cables so viewers can imagine their own experience inside the cabin.

Choose the right place to advertise

Where you list the car influences both speed and price. AutoTrader attracts serious private buyers willing to pay strong money, although you’ll pay higher listing fees. Dealer platforms like Motorway or Carwow offer quick sales with competitive bids, often better than a part-exchange. Convenience services such as WeBuyAnyCar move cars fast, but expect firm price reductions for minor flaws.

If your car is worth under £5,000, Facebook Marketplace can work well, though you’ll have to deal with plenty of casual messages.

Handle viewings and payment properly

Be upfront in your advert. If the car is HPI clear with no outstanding finance or insurance write-off history, state that clearly. Transparency shortens negotiations.

When someone wants a test drive, check their insurance certificate or confirm they have temporary cover. Many ‘driving other cars’ clauses only provide third-party cover, which leaves you exposed.

Never release the keys until the money shows in your bank. Complete the V5C transfer online with the DVLA straight after the deal – you’ll receive confirmation quickly, and your road tax refund should trigger automatically.

Best of luck!
