How to get rid of your Christmas tree in Bristol and South Gloucestershire

Your Christmas tree is probably still standing proud, but it probably senses its days are numbered.

Many of us take down our tree on the 12th day of Christmas (January 5) or the following day.

In case you're already wondering how you can get rid of it, we've put together a summary of the key collection dates.

How do you recycle Christmas trees

Bristol residents

Bristol Waste will be collecting trees for free again this year, on the same day as your rubbish collection.

The organisation is asking Bristol residents to put out their tree alongside their normal refuse or recycling.

The tree must be real and must be no longer than two metres.

Remember, collection dates will have changed due to the bank holidays on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. You can find out which day your collection date has been moved to here.

Christmas tree collection dates:

Tuesday, January 7

Wednesday, January 8

Thursday, January 9

Friday, January 10

Saturday, January 11

South Gloucestershire Council states: "If you have a garden waste subscription you can cut up the tree and put it in your green bin, or you can put the whole tree next to your green bin if it is under 6ft tall.

"If you do not have a garden waste subscription, you can buy a garden waste sack from your local library or Marshfield Country Stores (£2.20) and attach it to your tree with string (no plastic) and request a one-off garden waste collection."

The authority also states on its website that trees can be disposed of at recycling centres. They are open from 8.30am to 4.30pm every day, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The list of centres is as follows:

  • Little Stoke Sort It recycling centre, Station Road, Little Stoke, BS34 6HP (Note: large vehicles and trailers are not allowed at Little Stoke recycling centre at any time. There is a 1.8m height barrier in place at this site.
  • Mangotsfield Sort It recycling centre, Carsons Road, Mangotsfield, Bristol, BS16 9LL
  • Thornbury Sort It recycling centre, Short Way, Thornbury, BS35 3UT
  • Yate Sort It recycling centre, Collett Way, Great Western Business Park, Yate, Bristol, BS37 5NL
