How to get rid of condensation in double glazed windows – and what causes it?

Condensation occurs when there is a shift in temperature and warm air circulating our homes from the heating hits cold or frosty surfaces like windows.

While tackling condensation that accumulates on the outer parts of a window is easy enough, moisture that collects inside double glazed windows can be quite worrying.

Double glazed windows with thick multi-layered glass panes are pretty standard across modern homes in Britain, and condensation inside the glass is a common problem as well.

Here's what you need to know about condensation in double glazed windows including common causes and how to clean the inner layer of the glass.

What causes condensation inside double glazed windows?

Double glazed windows are two panes of glass that are separated by a layer of argon gas which is meant to keep the home warm by trapping heat.

Most double glazed windows have two seals, with an inner seal that protects against moisture and outer seal to protect the strength of the window.

If there's a build of moisture in the inner layer of your window, it's likely that the water-absorbing tube which sits in-between the inner and outer seals is not functioning properly because of one of the seals has broken.

Breakage of seals on insulated glass is usually caused by:

  • Water retention in the frame
  • Improper drainage around the window

When the seal breaks this is what causes the condensation to build between the think panes of glass, giving your windows a milky or foggy look.

There are a few ways to fix condensation inside windows.

Use a hair dryer

Use a hair dryer on a low heat to evaporate any moisture trapped between the glass panes of your window.

Applying light heat to the window can help remove stagnant droplets of water that maybe stuck in between the double glazing.

Do make sure it's done from a safe distance and that you keep the heat away from the seals to avoid melting any important components.

Ventilate

Good ventilation is key in tackling condensation around your home.

When humidity cannot escape, it forms water droplets on cold surfaces like glass windows and mirrors which then get trapped.

Open your windows every morning and also ensure you leave trickle vents open even if you're heading out.

Dehumidify

Using a dehumidifier is a quick fix for condensation indoors.

This helps prevent any excess humidity from turning into water droplets that get trapped in the inner layers of windows.

Can you fix condensation in double glazing?

While we can use a couple of quick fixes to tackle condensation between glass panes, the long-term solution is to contact a professional.

Professionals are likely to use a few ways to solve the problem of condensation. This includes:

  • Replacing the glass and saving the window - which is the cheaper option
  • Replacing the entire window fitting
  • Reseal the window panes

It's often better to replace the entire unit in order to prevent more problems with condensation which can even lead to mould and damp around your home.
