How to get rid of Christmas jumpers sustainably in Edinburgh and where you can donate them

As the festivities are soon to come to a close, Christmas jumpers will be packed away and the decorations will return to the attic for another year.

But if you have children, it is expected that they will grow out of that snowman jumper by the time it comes round again.

People are encouraged to not throw clothes into general waste as they can take over 200 years to decompose, but a study by sustainable menswear company LABFRESH found that the United Kingdom produces 206.456 tonnes of textile waste in a year.

And a number of Christmas knitwear's have been found to contain plastic after a study found 44 percent of the jumpers tested made entirely from acrylic.

Of course, when the festive jumpers and pyjamas are only worn for one season, they still have plenty of wear left in them that could be appreciated by another family.

Christmas Jumper Day takes place around December 10 to raise funds for Save The Children but parents have hit back at it as it puts pressure on those who can't afford a brand new jumper.

If you're looking to donate your Christmas clothing, there are places in Edinburgh that you can do so.

Worn in Wardrobe

Worn in Wardrobe is an Edinburgh-based children's clothing buy/sell website. They accept seasonal clothes and customers can drop off or post items.

See their website here.

Check your local schools

As Christmas Jumper Day grows more popular each year, some schools are known to set up a 'swap shop' style for seasonal clothes.

South Morningside Primary had a swap shop where children could swap in their old threads and pick out something new.

Check community facebook groups

There are a range of clothes swapping pages and groups on Facebook that people can join.

If you are simply happy to donate without selling or a swap, a simple post asking if anyone would want them would be a kind gesture.

Charity shops

If you're looking for new Christmas jumper or wanting to donate one yourself, charity shops can take them off your hands and Edinburgh has a massive range of charity shops throughout Edinburgh and surrounding areas.

But we recommend phoning up your local charity shop to make sure they are accepting donations at the time.

Vinted and Depop

If you want to try and make some cash, have a go at selling online. As well Facebook Marketplace and eBay, Vinted and Depop are popular apps that be used to sell unwanted clothes and you can give them a new lease of life.
