How to get help from your GP if you're ill but don't have coronavirus

With everyone aware of the medical guidance to follow in the event of any symptoms of coronavirus, many people are less sure of what to do about other illnesses.

The clear message concerning any suspicions of Covid-19 is of course not to visit a GP - or leave the house at all - and to call the NHS 111 number in the first instance to access online advice.

But for others wondering what to do about illnesses other than coronavirus which they would normally visit their GP about, the advice is - don't.

Given the rules about social distancing and need to avoid unnecessary travel, it's best to avoid going to the doctor's practice at all.

Instead The Department of Health is currently asking these people to contact their doctor's practice online.

They then will have a video or telephone assessment and from this a decision will be made, and advice given, on whether a face to face appointment is necessary.

The Department of Health also shared NHS tips on Monday about how to people can help manage their mental wellbeing during the coronavirus outbreak, advising everyone to stay connected with others; look after their bodies and to learn something new.
