How to get an NHS Covid Pass to prove you have been vaccinated for travel and events

More than 60 per cent of the adult population in the UK have now been fully vaccinated against coronavirus.

The NHS vaccine roll-out, which ministers have hailed as 'the way out of this pandemic', has now reached all adults across the UK, with everyone over the age of 19 eligible for a jab.

With society starting to open up again, there may be some situations that require proof of a vaccine.

Ministers say they are working on plans to allow fully-vaccinated Brits to return from holidays abroad without the need to quarantine, while some countries will only let travellers past their borders if they can show they've had both jabs.

The government has also been trialing a Covid certification system, which will be tested out at pilot events in the coming weeks.

The NHS app can now be used as a 'vaccine passport' to show if you've been immunised.

Here's how the NHS Covid Pass works, and how you can get one if you're asked for proof of a coronavirus vaccine.

What is an NHS Covid Pass?

The NHS Covid Pass is a way of proving you have had your coronavirus vaccine or have tested negative.

It was first launched when the UK's travel ban was lifted, as a way of proving your vaccination and testing status for international travel.

The NHS Covid Pass is a digital certificate, accessed via the NHS app, which shows an individual's Covid-19 vaccination details or test results.

Why might you need it?

The NHS says people may be asked to show their pass at pilot events, which are taking place as part of the Events Research Programme, or at the airport when they travel abroad.

Different countries have different restrictions for Brits arriving at the border so you will need to check whether a vaccine certificate is required before you travel.

The Covid certification system could be rolled out more widely at events following the results of the pilot programmes - but the government has previously said that people will not be asked to use the pass “in a domestic use setting” - such as pubs and restaurants.

How do I get one?

The NHS Covid Pass can be accessed via the NHS website or the NHS app.

You must be registered with a GP surgery in England to use the NHS app, which is different to the NHS Covid-19 app used for contact tracing.

Once logged in, users can get their pass, which can be downloaded as a PDF or sent to them by email.

Non-digital certificates are available too. A posted NHS Covid Pass letter can also be requested online or by calling 119, but this will only show someone is vaccinated and not cover test results.

Who is eligible for an NHS Covid Pass?

People aged 16 and over can get a pass two weeks after receiving the second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in England.

A pass can also be requested after receiving a negative PCR or rapid lateral flow test result within the past 48 hours.

Results from at-home lateral flow tests must be reported on the government’s website first.

Someone can request a pass if they have received a positive PCR test within the past six months after they have finished self-isolating and up to 180 days after taking the test.

Passes are not available for children aged 15 or younger.

Will it expire?

For double-jabbed people, a digital pass lasts for 28 days and then automatically renews.

For those who have received a negative coronavirus test result, the digital pass is valid for 48 hours after the result.

People who receive a positive PCR test, and have cleared self-isolating, will hold a digital pass for 180 days after the result.
