In today's Guardian, Alexis Petridis remembers the legendary record producer Joe Meek, who created classics like the Honeycombs' Have I The Right and Johnny Leyton's Johnny Remember Me. If your appetite has been whetted to hear the Holloway Road-based visionary's still impressively out-there productions, David Peters, spokesman for the Joe Meek Appreciation Society, recommends purchasing them from this website.
For a taster, however, according to David it's YouTube that still comes up trumps. There's a trailer for the US film about Meek here, a wonderfully unhinged performance of the Tornados' Robot here (nice helmets), and the same band playing The Globetrotter here. Then there's The Honeycombs doing their signature tune Have I the Right introduced by Jimmy Saville here, and Meek's muse Heinz playing Live it Up, with a very young Steve Marriott on drums here. Enjoy the spook-pop majesty - oh, and you might want to check out Jon Savage's brilliant essay on Meek here.
