In news guaranteed to add some cheer to a dreary weekend, a leading pub company is offering to serve customers a pint - completely for free.
Stonegate Pub Company, which runs 427 pubs in England and Wales - including several top boozers in Newcastle and the wider North East, is inviting people to claim a free beer or cider, saving themselves around £4, in a new offer which will be open from now until November 20.
Stonegate, which has the likes of the The Old George Inn and Akenside Traders in Newcastle, is offering the free pint of beer - or cider - to anyone who downloads and registers via its We Love Sport app on Apple and Android phones.
And the choice of tipple they can enjoy includes Carling; Budweiser; Bud Ligh; Hophouse; Strongbow; Strongbow Dark Fruits and Guinness.
Or, for those who don't want alcohol, there is also the option of a soft drink, saving them around £2, from a choice including Coca-Cola, Diet Coke or sugar-free Red Bull, subject to availability.
The only catch is that the freebie, which was advertised on Martin Lewis 's Money Saving Expert website is available only at those Stonegate venues which screen sport events on TV.

The app can be used to find the nearest participating pub too, which could also include bars such as Slug & Lettuce, Yates and Walkabout.
The offer, valid until Novebmer 20, allows one drink per person.
How to claim with the app
Once registered and signed up, just tap 'Offers' in the app then select the free drink. At the bar, tap 'use now' and show the screen to the bar staff.
