Burger King is hosting a one-day 'Whopper Takeover' to celebrate its most famous menu item.
The chain - whose North East branches include Burger Kings in Newcastle, Gateshead, Wallsend, Sunderland and the MetroCentre - is encouraging customers to order its signature Whopper today (Wednesday, April 17), saying it has taken other items off the menu for one day only.
Customers can even get a Whopper for free today.
The promotion is available at participating Burger Kings. Branches inside airports, railway stations and service stations are not taking part.
But free Whoppers should be available at most other restaurants in the North East, including the Northumberland Street , Newcastle Burger King; the Metro Centre branch and Sunderland's BK. But you won't be able to claim a free burger at Central Station or Newcastle Airport .
The offer is available at the manager's discretion and can be withdrawn at any time.

How to get a free Whopper at Burger King on Wednesday, April 17
To get a free Whopper, download Burger King's app and register as a customer. You can get the app on the Apple Store or through Google Play .
Click on the 'Vouchers' section, at the bottom of the screen. There, you should find a 'Happy Whopper Day' voucher. Select the 'Free Whopper On Us' voucher and present it to a cashier with 15 minutes. Be warned, the deal times out after 15 minutes and you can not download another voucher on the same account.
Alternatively, if you can order a free Whopper through Deliveroo , but delivery charges may apply.
The offer is available at open Burger Kings from 6am on April 17 to 4am on Thursday, April 18.
