I'm convinced that finding a needle in a haystack is way less effort than getting the Katana in Megabonk. This weapon is, in theory, an easy five-percent drop in the Desert stage, but actually getting it can feel way harder than this.
Megabonk's Weapons tab in the Unlock menu says you have a "5% chance to find it upon breaking a Tumbleweed on Desert Stage 1." While these are pretty straightforward instructions, it's important to keep some things in mind:
- Desert Stage 1 means the first area in any of the Tiers. If you're playing Desert Tier 2 or 3, you'll only be able to get the Katana in the very first map. After you defeat the first boss and move to the second stage, you'll no longer get the Katana by breaking Tumbleweeds.
- Tumbleweeds are small balls of dry plant material that slowly roll around in the Desert stage.
- They spawn at random and don't show up on the mini-map.
- Your character can't break tumbleweeds by shooting them. You must approach them and interact to break them.

Katana won't drop in Megabonk
If you've broken dozens of tumbleweeds in the right Desert stage in Megabonk and still can't get the Katana, I'm sorry: you're one of the unlucky players in probability hell. Welcome to the club! A 5% chance means that, on average, players will drop a Katana in up to 20 tumbleweeds broken, but it can take many more attempts than this. Your actual chance of dropping it in your first 20 attempts is around 64%.
No game effects change the Katana's drop rate.
I've found more tumbleweeds by standing still for a few seconds and looking around rather than sprinting through the map. Since their color is really similar to desert sand, it can be easy to miss them if you're always moving. Stop for a bit if you're not getting swarmed by enemies and try to find more of them.
Play the game normally and break thumbleweeds as you go in the Desert map instead of target farming it. I'd only repeat the Desert stage to get the Katana if I had already cleared every tier of the stage.
If you break tumbleweed in Stage 2 instead, you have the same 5% chance of dropping the Shotgun instead.
