The secret's out as Greggs launched its Vegan Steak Bake in Newcastle last night.
There were lengthy queues on Grainger Street on Wednesday night as Greggs launched its follow-up to the hugely successful Vegan Sausage Roll. alike were all lined up outside Greggs to be among the first take on the Steak Bake.
The meat and dairy-free steak slice will be available in 1,300 Greggs shops from Thursday January 2, before being added to the remaining 700 Greggs branches from January 16.
Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: "Our Vegan Sausage Roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.
"The launch of our Vegan Steak Bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers’ favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback."
The Vegan Steak Bake is priced at £1.55. Greggs spent months developing the product, which was taste-tested by a panel of vegans and meat eaters. Quorn is used as a meat substitute, which is bound together using potato instead of egg to make it vegan. It is bound together in 96 layers of vegan pastry. The Quorn contains a mycoprotein derived from the soil Fusarium venenatum fungus and it is grown by fermentation.

With 1,300 out of 2000 Greggs stocking Vegan Steak Bakes from Thursday January 2, it is likely your nearest branch will have them in today.
However, expect the product to be a top-seller over the coming days, as was the case for the Vegan Sausage Roll this time last year, so it may be difficult to get your hands on one if you are not quick. By January 16, the Vegan Steak Bake will be available in 2,000 Greggs stores around the country.
Greggs is launching a 'Vegan Steak Bake' finder, which allows customers to check which Greggs' near them will have the product in from today.
