How to find cheap petrol near you amid rising oil prices and new fuel shortage fears

Oil prices have surged to the highest level in more than seven years due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Howard Cox, founder of FairFuelUK, warned costs could surge in the coming weeks, which could in further affect the price of petrol.

The national average for unleaded petrol is now around £1.50 per litre, with diesel costing even more than that.

However, Mr Cox has warned prices could jump by an extra 10p in the "immediate future", while "an extra 30p rise is not out of the question".

In addition, motorists are being urged not to panic buy petrol amid fears a minor fuel shortage could escalate.

There have been some reports of fuel shortages, but nothing like the widespread petrol crisis of 2021 (Liverpool Echo)

So what should you do if you need fuel, and where can you find the cheapest fuel? Here is everything you need to know.

How to find cheap petrol near you

You should only buy petrol if you need it, and only buy what you need.

That being said, it is understandable many need petrol to go about their daily lives, and with prices surging it can be hard.

Luckily, there is a way of finding out the cheapest petrol in your area.

Prices of petrol and diesel vary depending on the area you live, and which specific fuel station you choose to fill up at.

Make sure you do your homework before heading out to fill petrol (Liverpool Echo)

So, before you head out make sure you do your homework to find the cheapest petrol station in your area.

You can do this by registering at the PetrolPrices.com website. Simply enter your postcode and tell the website how far you're willing to travel for fuel.

This will allow you to compare prices nearby before deciding on where to go. It covers around 8,500 forecourts across the UK.

It will list the cheapest filling stations in your area, and gives you the most up-to-date figures, according to the website.

Using petrol station loyalty cards

You can also save money on filling up if you have a fuel loyalty card, which is offered at several petrol stations.

For example, if you're a Star Rewards member at Texaco, you can save 1p for every litre of fuel purchased.

Once you've got 500 points you will get a £5 voucher or gift card that you can use the next time you fill up.

Shell's loyalty scheme is called Shell Go+, which allows users to earn visits instead of points. All you have to do is spend £10 or more on fuel or £2 or more in the shop.

This will allow you to get 10% off all hot drinks, deli2go and Jamie Oliver deli by Shell food ranges, and you'll get money off food every 10 visits.

BP's rewards programme is called BPme, which allows you to collect points when you pay for fuel or any products.

You earn one point for every litre of fuel, or for every £1 spent in store.

When you hit 200 points you can get £1 off fuel or choose from other rewards.

Panic buying and weather disruptions could be the reason for fuel shortages at some petrol stations across the UK.

Disruption to shipments of fuel due to Storm Eunice has meant that some petrol stations have been running low, although the situation is nowhere near as bad as the fuel crisis in September 2021.

As a result, some petrol stations in the UK have seen queues at the pumps, as deliveries at some stations aren't scheduled until next week.

Long queues have been seen at a number of locations as people tried to fill up ahead of price spikes expected due to the start of the war in Ukraine, WalesOnline reports.
