If you are anything like me and nerd out about data and the Census, WE ARE SO ON DIVAS. That’s right, we have finally made it five years to the 2026 Census aka the time to spill the tea on the nation.
So here’s everything you should know going into it.
What is the Census?
Tomorrow night, Tuesday August 11, 2026, everyone in Australia will be accounted for. That includes the mainland, Tassie, Norfolk Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island.
The Census of Population and Housing has been happening every five years since 1911 so the Australian Bureau of Statistics can get a “snapshot” of who lives here and how we’re going.
That data is used to plan things like hospitals, schools, housing, roads and public transport which helps shape what services end up in our neighbourhoods.
If this is your first Census as a grown‑up, same! ABS spokespeople keep stressing that lots of people are doing it for the first time, and the whole point is making sure everyone understands what it is and why it matters before tomorrow night. We gotchu!
Who needs to complete the Census?
Basically everyone physically in Australia tomorrow night. That means citizens, permanent residents, international visitors, students, people on temporary visas and people with no fixed address who are staying somewhere that night.
This means you and I will be doing the Census together with Slayyyter who is currently touring Australia (so therefore we are besties) as well as any local Aussie star you can imagine too. You and SophaDopha could be filling out the same form at the same time as you. If that’s not community, I don’t know what is!!!
If you’re travelling within Australia tomorrow on a long‑distance train, bus, flight or staying in a hotel, you still need to include where you’re sleeping that night, or mark as “away” but usually living at your home address.
If you’re overseas tomorrow, you’re off the hook.
Who needs to be counted at your place for the Census?
If you’re the one doing the form for your household tomorrow, you need to include everyone who spends Census night at your address: you, your partner, family members, housemates, boarders, friends on the couch, and international visitors. You also need to note people who usually live there but are away for work and coming back the next day.
If you’re worried about your housemates learning too much of your lore, worry not because you can fill out individual copies. You can request a separate form or get your own login so the sharehouse admin doesn’t see your answers. Your situationships, income and potential career crisis stay between you and the ABS.
How to fill out the Census?
By now, most households should have a letter or paper pack with instructions. You can complete the Census as soon as you know where you’ll be tomorrow night — so if that’s locked in, you don’t have to wait until exactly 8pm to start. Online is the default option, but you can use a paper form if that suits you better.
The form will ask about things like your age, sex recorded at birth, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status, where you live now and where you lived one and five years ago, your marital status, ancestry, religion, languages you use, your education, your work and your income. There are questions about your dwelling, like the number of registered cars, rent or mortgage and, for people aged 16 and over, there are extra questions on gender and sexual orientation with a “prefer not to answer” option if you’re not comfortable sharing that.
When do we find out about the 2026 Census data?
Unfortunately the 2026 Census data doesn’t drop straight away. The Australian Bureau of Statistics will start releasing results in stages from June 2027, with most topics coming out in that first release. A second release with more detailed employment‑related data is scheduled for October 2027, and the more complex stuff like commute distances and socio‑economic indexes, will roll out from early 2028.
Is the Census compulsory?
Yes! The Census is compulsory under Australian law, so tomorrow is not a flakeable situation. If someone doesn’t complete the Census when they’re told to, they can receive a formal written direction to do so, and if they still refuse they can be prosecuted and fined up to $364 a day. Knowingly providing false or misleading information is also an offence and can lead to a fine of up to $3,640. But I know you data-heads wouldn’t be pulling that type of tomfoolery on the best night of the year obviiii!!!
