How to decorate with Evergreen Fog, the 'perfect green' paint color from Sherwin-Williams

A living room with wooden furniture, bookshelves, and faded green walls.

There's nothing better than a calm and relaxing space to return to at the end of a long day, and the way you design your home has a big impact on your mood. In particular, the color of your walls can transform a room from harsh and jarring to warm and welcoming in an instant.

Some shades really withstand the test of time, and Sherwin-Williams' Evergreen Fog has risen in popularity once again, highlighting the ever-popular color trend for green. The 2022 Color of the Year, Evergreen Fog is back, and designers are loving decorating rooms of all kinds with the versatile hue. Here's how designers and color experts alike are making the cool, neutral green look fresh for 2024.

What color is Sherwin-Williams Evergreen Fog?

Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, describes Evergreen Fog as a 'gentle green-gray with just a hint of blue.' It's a fresh blend between two of the most popular paint colors, and works across both design styles and areas of the home.

'I like to call it the perfect green paint color, since it’s not too dark and not too bold, so homeowners can use it on all four walls of their homes and create a beautiful calming space. The hue’s neutral undertone makes it a very adaptable paint color, especially when paired with the right colors, finishes, and materials,' says Sue.

How to decorate with Evergreen Fog

Luckily for those entranced by Evergreen Fog, Sue says it works 'anywhere, in any amount.' The shade can cover an exterior space, a full wall or a small detail like paneling or molding. But to get the most benefit out of the tranquil shade, Sue suggests using it in rooms where you crave a calmer atmosphere.

'We love saving it for spaces where we seek relaxation and comfort in our every day, like a bedroom,' she says.

Evergreen Fog is quite easy to pair with other shades, but keep an eye out for warm whites and neutrals. Sue suggests 'creamy whites, like Shoji White SW 7042, beiges with gray undertones, like Accessible Beige SW 7036, burnt caramel colors like Uber Umber SW 9107 and brownish grays like Urbane Bronze SW 7048.'

To embrace the shade for 2024, Sue says to celebrate nature's beauty by pairing it with organic accents that incorporate wood, gold, silver and matte black metals. Tiles and textures made of stone will also draw depth from Evergreen Fog.

'Tweedy and grainy monochromatic textiles provide the perfect complement to round up the look as well,' says Sue.

Evergreen Fog also brings a sense of calm to rooms beyond the bedroom. Kathy Kuo, interior designer and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home, says the shade would work beautifully in any space that could use a relaxing refresh.

'I love the idea of using Evergreen Fog as the wall color for a home office, a cozy media room, or even a guest room. It's a color that's equal parts upscale luxury and nature-inspired, so it lends itself to a more polished and formal look, as well as to a more eclectic hygge vibe,' she says.

And the color works well for a variety of interior design styles, whether you lean more modern or appreciate the vintage look.

'This versatile muted green is a perfect color for a number of nuanced design styles, from organic modern, to French country, to dark cottagecore,' says Kathy.

In this powder room painted with Evergreen Fog, designer Jean Stoffer, founder of Jean Stoffer Design, blended the shade with white fixtures, gold accents, and a pop of bold wallpaper. Jean says she appreciates the shade for its' depth and interest,' and has used it across her own home in different applications.

'I view it as an organic neutral that can be used by itself, enveloping an entire room as in my home office. It also can be a rich complement to wallpaper as in my Powder Room and den where I used it on all the millwork and ceiling,' she says.

No matter which room you're designing, Evergreen Fog may be the shade that'll make your space feel like a beautiful, relaxing oasis. With a deep mix of greys, greens and blues, the hue is more than fit for decorating into the new year.
