How to day drink like a pro? Try these (actually good) lower ABV alternatives

Longer, sunnier days can mean only one thing: it’s time to descend on any square inch of green space for Great British day drinking season.

Both a blessing and a curse, it’s an activity that not only crafts everlasting, rosé-tinted memories but can also have the least sensible of us rolling home with sore heads come 6pm.

Once upon a time, if you wanted to mitigate such a disaster you’d have to exercise a modicum of self control (i.e. abstain, drink Babycham or opt for non-alcoholic alternatives), though these days, there are an increasing number of enjoyable lower-ABV alternatives that are an excellent compromise.

Decem gin (£29.95) comes in at a quarter of the spirit’s usual strength at only 10%, and boasts just 24 calories per 50ml, making it a brilliant way to curb the danger of a Martini, Negroni or a traditional G&T. Likewise, the 12% Quarter Blanco Agave (£22.50) is an excellent substitute for tequila, and makes a mean margarita or Paloma.

Just peachy: Quarter Tequila (Quarter)

Otherwise, those keen to forgo the faff of mixers or a cocktail shaker should look to the Margarita Next and Negroni Next by Nio Cocktails (£19.50 for pack of three) which are only 10.8% abv compared with the brand’s full-strength concoctions, which come in at upwards of 22%.

Looking for a beer with just a touch of booze? Fans of BrewDog’s Punk IPA and Lost Lager should reach for the brewery’s new Cold Beer (£8.99 for 10 cans), a session-style lager available at 3.4%.

Cheers to fewer hangovers (Brewdog)

Meanwhile, wine enthusiasts who don’t fancy a spritz should try The Gentle (from £10.99), a 6% blend of both dealcoholised and regular wine available in white, rosé, red and sparkling formats.

The challenge? Not drinking twice as much of the stuff. Good luck to you.
