How to cut your fringe if you're struggling with lockdown locks

It's become the curse of lockdown.

Our hair, which we're so used to having calmed, controlled and coiffed in our regular trips to the hairdesser or barber has by this stage of lockdown reached the wild and weird stage.

And no matter how hard we might try to tame excess growth with clips, bands and potions in order to at least look recognisable to our colleagues and friends during video chats, the time has come for us to take action.

While there is now an opening date in sight for hair salons, most people - whether just suffering from hair in the eyes or on the cusp of being a Cousin Itt lookalike - will feel a need to be brave and at least tackle their fringe. As for how to deal with roots, that's another story.

There are various videos and tips springing up online on how to give the fringe a trim and among them is this tutorial from health and beauty store Superdrug.

So, if your long locks are looking more lank than luscious, here's what you need to do:

Step-by-step fringe guide

1. Use the comb to pull one side of your fringe at a time diagonally down towards your eyebrows to separate the fringe from the rest of your hair. See here for video clips to help along the way.

2 . Use the spray to dampen the fringe so all the hair goes in the same direction.

3 . Pull down a section of fringe with a comb, with the index and middle fingers of your other hand following above, to see how much you want to cut off. You may want to try it at an angle.

4 . Pull the hair outwards so it's level with the tip of your nose and begin to cut the hair beneath your fingers slowly, a couple of millimetres off at a time.

5. When you've a length you're happy with, make a few small angled snips at the ends of the fringe for a more natural look.

6. Use straighteners to curl the fringe from the roots to the tip in an arching motion to build volume. Styling oil can be used at this point for a sleeker look.
