How to claim £144 if you've been working from home

People who have worked from home since the start of the pandemic lockdown could be in line to claim £144 from the UK Government.

The money is available to cover the extra expense of working from home - such as electricity and heating bills.

Money Saving Expert has explained how you can claim £24 a month tax back on extra costs - meaning that if you've worked from home since March, you might be in line for as much as £144.

HMRC says it will consider claims from employees working at home due to coronavirus measures if their usual workplace is closed.

To claim, you simply need to speak with your employer, as bosses can pay you £6 extra a week - tax-free.

But if you feel uncomfortable, given the state of the economy and uncertainty surrounding workplaces, then there is another way, reports Birmingham Live.

You won't need bills or receipts as proof of your claim.

If you do a self-assessment form, you can claim on that, or alternatively, through an online P87 form through a government portal.

You can also fill out a postal form, as long as you have your company's details - such as a name, PAYE reference, and your own job title and responsibility within the workplace.

You will need to fill out the "amount paid by you" - just put a total amount that's equivalent to £6/wk for the period you've been working from home - and the amount paid to you by your employer.

Just put £0 if your boss hasn't paid you a working from home allowance.

You will likely hear back within a couple of weeks.

The money may be given to you as a reduction in tax you pay - rather than as a refund.
