How to cancel Amazon Prime and get a refund

Amazon has announced that it will put up the cost of its Prime membership for most Irish customers from September. Read on to learn how to cancel your Amazon Prime subscription if you don't want to pay the price hike.

An Amazon Prime membership in Ireland through the UK-based marketplace currently costs roughly €9.45 (£7.99) a month, or €93 (£79) a year. This will be going up to €10.68 (£8.99), or €112 (£95) a year - depending on exchange rates. It is the first price increase for the service since 2014.

How much you'll pay depends on whether your account is registered through the German Amazon marketplace or is UK based. Read more on how you can find out which account you have here.

The Amazon Prime membership gives customers access to unlimited free next-day or "Premium" deliveries from Amazon on eligible items. It also gives you access to their streaming service Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Prime Reading for Kindle users. Cancelling your Prime membership will also cancel your access to these services.

How to cancel your Amazon Prime membership

  1. First head to Amazon’s website (Amazon.co.uk) and enter your login details. In the top right corner you will see a drop-down menu that reads “Account & Lists”.
  2. Hover over “Account & Lists” and choose the option “Prime Membership”. It will take you to another page.
  3. At the top right of this page there will be a grey box that reads “Manage Membership”. Hover over this to see the drop down menu, and select “End Membership”.
  4. But you’re not done yet. From there Amazon will take you to another page where it will ask you to confirm you want to end your membership, click “Cancel my Benefits” followed by “Continue to Cancel”, and “End Now” to receive a refund of any eligible funds.

Can I get a refund on my Amazon Prime membership?

Yes, it is possible to get a full refund for an unused Amazon Prime membership. You may also get a partial refund based on the services you’ve used, Amazon states. The refund should be processed within three to five days, the website claims.

Follow the instructions above to cancel your membership, and be sure to click “End Now” at the final stage to receive a refund. It will also give you the option to cancel after the period you’ve already paid for, but you will not receive a refund if you select this.

How do I cancel Amazon Video?

Amazon Prime includes Amazon Video, so cancelling your Prime membership should end your Amazon Video subscription. However, it is possible to have a Video-only subscription without having an Amazon Prime membership. Here's how to cancel in that case.

Amazon offers a number of separate subscriptions that you may have, including a stand-alone subscription to Amazon Video for non Amazon Prime users, add-on subscriptions to Prime Video channels such as HBO, and a subscription to its Audiobook platform Audible. To check what subscriptions you’re paying for follow the steps below.

Head to Amazon's website. To see all of your Amazon subscriptions hover over “Account & Lists” in the right hand corner and choose the option “Memberships & Subscriptions” from the drop down menu. It will then take you to a page with all of your active Amazon subscriptions.

Your Amazon Video subscription should be listed. To cancel your Amazon Video membership from here, click “Prime Membership Settings” to the right of this.

This will take you to another page with a grey box in the top right that says “Manage Membership”. Hover over this to see the drop down menu, and select “End Membership”.

You will then need to click “Continue to Cancel” to get the job done. The cancellation process will be very similar for any other subscriptions you have on your Amazon account.
