How to book a covid PCR test amid shortage of lateral flows in Scotland

In recent days, lateral flow home test kits have been unavailable to many through the UK Government website, despite Scots being urged to get tested for covid.

The news came after cases of Omicron began to surge and with a high demand, came a shortage of lateral flow tests all across the UK.

The Government website confirmed there were no more home tests available and advised people to "try again later" or to book a test site appointment instead.

However, there appeared to be no problems with the availability of PCR home test kits.

As of now, the shortage seems to have subsided and you can order an LFT test here from the NHS website with hundreds of options listed for Glasgow that don't need a booking.

But how can you order a PCR if there is another shortage of the LFTs?

How to book a PCR test in Scotland

If you have the common covid symptom indicators such as a high temperature, a new and continuous cough as well as a change or loss to your smell or taste, you can book a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test through the Gov.uk website here.

You can order a PCR test kit to be sent to your home or book an appointment at a walk-in or drive-through test site.

Can I book a PCR test if I have no symptoms?

Yes! You can also use this service if you come under any of the following:

  • You’ve been in contact with someone who’s tested positive and you must self-isolate
  • You’ve been asked to get a test by a local council or someone from NHS Test and Trace
  • A GP or other health professional has asked you to get a test
  • You’re taking part in a government pilot project
  • You’ve been asked to get a test to confirm a positive result
  • You’ve received an unclear result and were told to get a second test
  • You need to get a test for someone you live with who has symptoms
  • You’re in the National Tactical Response Group
