How to become a bright spark on electric vehicles

UNDERSTANDING electric vehicles (EVs) is not the simplest thing you can
undertake to do.

With up to 70 per cent of people now considering an electric vehicle as their next car, finding the right information has never been more important – but it can be a bit of a challenge.

If you get the right facts and figures, you can make a good, informed choice and enjoy many years of happy, guilt-free motoring. If you get the wrong person who confuses and baffles, you can make a very bad decision that will put you off cleaner motoring for years.

The obvious question is: Who to ask? You could, of course, pile into a dealership.

The good ones can be a wonderful source of knowledge, the worst ones will try to talk you out of buying electric, as they don’t understand them, and instead talk you into a car with an internal combustion engine, as you’ll ask less questions.

The key to buying any vehicle is knowing your stuff. Doing the hard yards of research is key to making a good decision.

If you want a good starting point for information, you could begin by having a look at the Energy Saving Trust website. They provide independent information on many aspects of buying and owning an electric vehicle.

I can heartily recommend the Electric Vehicle Association Scotland – a group of enthusiasts that have forgotten more about electric vehicles than I will ever know.

You’ll find them online at www.eva.scot and they have a very active Facebook and Twitter presence, and love answering questions from the very mundane through to the highly complex.

I am a simple soul and love clarity of message more than anything. One website that does this best is www.electriccarhome.co.uk in my opinion. It was created by David Lewis, a communications expert, who just loves electric cars and supporting infrastructure.

David wrote the website not to make money but to help us all understand how to get the best from an EV. It is a complete and readable guide and is certainly worth a good look as a starting point on your journey towards getting an electric car.

Electric vehicles are now a matter of when, rather than if.
