How to be emotionally strong in a relationship

We are all dependent on our partners for emotional support, and that's not a bad thing. After having a good or bad day, we need someone to share our experiences with, someone who will listen to us intently, understand our situation, and offer us the right advice. However, it doesn't mean one becomes fully dependent on their partner for emotional support as it can create unrealistic expectations and create trouble. Constant texting, the need for attention, and seeking validation can make you appear desperate and needy — and that's not what one wants.

Here are five ways to be emotionally strong in a relationship:

1. Create boundaries

It’s important to set boundaries in a relationship so that you respect each other's personal space. It's not ideal to bombard each other with constant texts and calls and expect them to reply immediately. Respect, gratitude, and honesty is important in a relationship.

2. Clear communication

Clear communication in a relationship can resolve many doubts and ease insecurities. Do not hestitate to voice out concerns, or acknowledge each other's importance. Communication is the key to a healthy relationship.

3. Set your priorities

Your relationship is not your entire life. You should have personal goals and accomplishments that matter to you. Relying solely on your relationship can lead to issues; instead, set your priorities and work toward them. Doing so will also earn you respect from your partner.

4. Self-awarenessBeing self-aware is vital in any relationship. You should be clear about what you want and how it will affect you in both the short and the long term. Overfocussing on your partner could be detrimental to your emotional health.

5. Don’t have unrealistic expectations

Having expectations in a relationship is natural, but setting unrealistic expectations will only lead to disappointment. Keep your expectations realistic to avoid getting hurt.
