How to battle high cholesterol as new drug Inclisiran approved in England

A new cholesterol-lowering drug could save tens of thousands of lives in the UK over the coming decade, health chiefs say.

The new drug, Inclisiran, will be prescribed to people with high cholesterol or unusually high levels of fats in their blood - a condition known as mixed dyslipidaemia - who have already suffered a heart attack or stroke.

It has been estimated that the drug could save up to 30,000 lives over the next ten years.

But just what is high cholesterol, and what does it mean for your health?

What is high cholesterol?

High cholesterol is when you have an excess of cholesterol (a fatty substance) in your blood. It has been linked to some serious health problems.

Causes of high cholesterol include eating too much fatty food, not getting enough exercise, drinking too much alcohol and smoking. It can also be hereditary, passed down in families.

As high cholesterol does not cause symptoms, the only way to determine whether or not you have it is by taking a blood test.

What health problems are caused by high cholesterol?

High cholesterol can block your blood vessels, putting you at increased risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke.

How many people have high cholesterol?

More than two out of five people in England have high cholesterol, with 6.5 million in total taking lipid-lowering drugs like statins, according to NHS England.

How can I lower my risk of high cholesterol?

There are steps you can take to reduce your risk of high cholesterol.

In particular, eating a healthier diet and getting more exercise can help you keep your cholesterol levels under control.

You may also need to take medication to lower your cholesterol depending on your condition, however.
