How to avoid lightning during thunderstorms as Met Office issues weather warning

The Met Office has issued a severe  weather  warning for thunderstorms this week, with lightning and downpours expected to hit Bristol on Tuesday (July 30).

Such storms bring very real dangers, as one Bristol man discovered last week when he .

Therefore, it's vital you know what steps you should take to stay safe during stormy conditions.

Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from the centre of a storm so if you can hear thunder, you are likely close enough to be at risk, reports Liverpool Echo .

If you count less than 30 seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder, then you are definitely in danger.

Here's a full list of what steps to take to protect yourself when lightning begins to strike:

What to do

  • Make sure you unplug all non-essential appliances, including the television, as lightning can cause power surges.
  • If outside, avoid water and find a low-lying open place far away from trees, poles or metal objects as possible.
  • If you find yourself in an exposed location, it's best to squat close to the ground, with your hands on your knees and your head tucked between them. It also advised you try to touch as little of the ground with your body as possible.
  • If you feel your hair stand on end, it means lightning is about to strike and you should drop into the brace position immediately.
  • Bring your pets inside.

What not to do

  • Avoid using taps and sinks - metal pipes can conduct electricity. Avoid taking a shower for the same reason.
  • Don't make landline phone as telephone lines can conduct electricity. Only make calls if it is an emergency.
  • Don't put up an umbrella if you're caught in a storm - the metal could direct the current into your body.
  • Don't go outside too soon after a thunderstorm - it's best to wait until at least 30 minutes after you see the last flash of lightning.
  • This may sound obvious but avoid activities such as golf or fishing.
