How to attract wildlife to your backyard

Do you have a resident dragon at your place?

With ABC Wild Oz coming to an end for now, you might be wondering how you will get your daily animal fix.

So, with the help of Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (WPSQ) project manager Matt Cecil, we've compiled some useful tips and tricks to help bring wildlife into your very own backyard.

Tip 1: Provide wildlife friendly gardens

Nowadays, animals face higher levels of competition for habitat, food and shelter, so providing animals with cover by planting native trees and bushes will give them more reason to stay, or at the very least keep returning.

"A backyard that's just grass doesn't have a lot for wildlife to play with," Mr Cecil said.

Adding flowering plants and hedges will also provide a refuge for animals seeking cover from predators, and a place for them to relax.

In addition to providing shelter, native plants are an important source of berries, nuts and nectar for wildlife.

Tip 2: Food and water

If you want the visits to be a regular occurrence, be sure to continue to provide food and clean water.

Treat them like you would any other guest to your home and consider their needs when it comes to food.

A bird feeder might just be your best bet for attracting wildlife to your backyard.

This will supplement natural food sources that could be found in your yard, as well as offer you a close connection with nature.

But remember to keep the feeder clean.

Tip 3: Keep pets under control

The best bet for attracting wildlife to your backyard is keeping your pets inside.

Even well behaved cats and dogs are still predators, and their presence may scare your native visitors.

If your pets do love spending time outdoors, you could use an enclosed area for the cats and dogs to play in that is separate to the feeding areas you have created.
