How Tiger Woods can advance at the 2019 WGC Match Play

Tiger Woods is back at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play for the first time since 2013, but the 14-time major champion does not control his own destiny on the final day of group play. After winning his opening match against Aaron Wise, Woods fell to Brandt Snedeker on Thursday – and Snedeker will have the chance to send Woods home prior to the knockout round.

Woods began his final match with a 1-1-0 record, trailing Snedeker and Patrick Cantlay, who each went 1-0-1 in their first two matches. In the Match Play event, the winner of each four-man group advances to the round of 16.

  • For Woods to have any chance of advancing, he needs to defeat Cantlay on Friday, and needs Snedeker to lose or halve his match with Wise
  • If Woods and Wise both win, Tiger will go through
  • If Woods wins and the Snedeker-Wise match is halved, Woods and Snedeker will have a sudden-death playoff to determine the winner
  • If Cantlay and Snedeker both finish with a win, or both finish with a halve, they will play a sudden-death playoff

Woods went 1-up on Cantlay with a birdie at the par-3 fourth hole.

Cantlay, however, quickly turned the tide by winning No. 5 and No. 6 back-to-back to go 1-up.

Televised coverage of the WGC Match Play will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Golf Channel. You can stream coverage online via NBC Sports Live.
