How Thomas Tuchel’s previous Chelsea plan could be left in tatters by one major decision

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel may have to make some brutal decisions regarding his team’s ambitions later this season.

The German has previously spoken about his ambitions to lift silverware with the Blues and has already done that by lifting the club’s second Champions League crown, whilst having also claimed the UEFA Super Cup against Villarreal.

The squad are now competing on even more fronts having progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, all the while managing to occupy top spot in the Premier League.

Indeed, Tuchel confirmed that he is aiming to claim as much silverware as possible after the Blues squeezed past Aston Villa a few weeks ago.

He said: “This is why we are here [to win trophies]. We are here to win and the club is built to win and this is the DNA of the club.

“We want to be competitive and this is what we are up for as coaches and as a team. So any competition we start, we go for the very best and this is a final at Wembley that we want to reach.”

That mantra is set to be tested to its absolute limit with an extremely busy January - a month that could yet get even more hectic - just starting to appear on the horizon.

Throughout the month, Chelsea are already set to compete in the Premier League, whilst aiming to go one better in the FA Cup as the third round gets underway.

Should they still be in the competition, Tuchel will also have to plan for the Carabao Cup semi-finals that are set to be played in early January.

It goes without saying then that the fixture list already looks busy for his Chelsea side.

This is even without the prospect of the FIFA Club World Cup and the African Cup of Nations dramatically altering his plans.

Reports have suggested that FIFA are considering rescheduling the former for January 2022, meaning that Chelsea will be required to potentially fly away to a yet unknown location should they have ambitions on lifting the trophy.

Whilst it might be a smart move to Tuchel to split his squad in two in order to compete for all honours, some of his squad - namely Edouard Mendy and Hakim Ziyech - will be required to depart for Cameroon during the month for their excursions at the African Cup of Nations.

So, with the Chelsea squad set to be tested to an absolute extreme, Tuchel may have to make a decision of which trophies he prioritises despite previously setting out his stance on claiming the maximum amount of silverware as possible.
