How Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea got the better of Man City again as Ben Chilwell pinpoints the key

Here are your Chelsea morning headlines following a historic night for the Blues in Porto.

Ferdinand and Cole talk Chelsea shape

Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole were impressed by Chelsea's shape in their Champions League final win over Manchester City.

“It’s been fantastic," said Ferdinand on BT Sport. "A chess match is what we said before the game. When City have been in possession, Chelsea’s midfield has been 17 yards is what they’ve got between the back line and the front line there.

"There’s no gaps in the Chelsea midfield, you cannot play through it, you can’t play around it, they can play over it maybe, but City haven’t taken the opportunities.”

Fellow pundit Joe Cole added: “That image there, that’s where you want your team against Man City - no spaces, they had nowhere to go.”

Tuchel's verdict

Thomas Tuchel has spoken about what it means to win the Champions League with Chelsea.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: “To share it with everybody is incredible. What a fight, we made it 1-0 but I don’t know what to feel actually.

“I was so grateful to arrive anyway, to arrive the second time, but it felt different. We somehow, we could feel it and I’m happy.

“Today, they were deserving to win this. We wanted to be the stone in the shoe, the stone in the clockwork of Man City. We encouraged everyone to step out, go for duels one-on-one.

"We were great and had some dangerous counter-attacks, had some opportunities. The second-half was a real fight.

“That was a massive moment [with Christian Pulisic] that could have been 2-0 then we had to defend.

"It was very intense, very fast, the circumstances.”

Chilwell left speechless

Ben Chilwell was left speechless at the final whistle as he won his first Champions League title.

“I don’t really know what to say, to be honest. We fought so hard today, we knew that it was going to be a tough game," he said to BT Sport after the game.

"Probably the second-half, really, we fought for our lives. We pictured this moment, this feeling, and yeah, it’s just amazing. I’m speechless right now. It’s why I came to Chelsea, a dream come true.

“We knew their strengths, Riyad (Mahrez) and Raheem (Sterling) on the wings were potentially going to cause us problems, so me and Reece (James) had to be on our game and I think the key was to be aggressive with them.

"I was getting a bit tired as the game went on, but when the Champions League is up for grabs, it doesn’t really matter.

“Thiago [Silva] going off was not what we wanted, but the three centre-backs were brilliant. Toni [Rudiger] has been amazing, he’s been absolutely class since the manager came in and I think everyone today defended for their lives.”
