How this Notts housing estate took just four days to build

A new Nottinghamshire housing estate took just four days to build.

Nine zero-carbon properties have been constructed as part of a development off Williams Lane, Fernwood, Newark, called Newlands.

Each home, made up of two modules - a ground and a first floor - was engineered by modular manufacturer ilke Homes at its factory in Knaresbough, North Yorkshire, before being delivered ready for the installation.

The construction process, that took four days, involved a crane arriving on site, the modules being installed and roofs fitted.

Martin Valentine, chief executive of Positive Homes, the developer, said: “Modular housing is a completely different way of construction when you compare it to traditional methods.

"Because our houses are factory-built it means it only takes a matter of hours to put them in place once they’re brought to site.

“This means they are precision-engineered to the highest possible standards and will be sustainable for the years to come, something we’re incredibly passionate about at Positive Homes, especially when the climate change crisis is so prominent in everyone’s minds.”

The finishing touches will now be made.

Joining up the modules, roofing, laying the guttering and commissioning power services inside will take place over the next few weeks with completion aimed for mid-February. Following completion, the first residents will then begin to move in.

Dave Sheridan, executive chairman at ilke Homes, said: “Given the enormity of the climate change challenge, it’s crucial that as an industry we make determined efforts to shift towards a far-more sustainable approach.

"Off-site manufacturing consumes considerably less energy than traditional construction methods and is the most efficient method of delivering high-quality and highly-sustainable homes at speed.

“By switching to off-site manufacturing, we can quickly deliver the zero-carbon homes of the future.

"We’re proud to be working alongside Positive Homes, and leading the way in delivering the very best and most sustainable homes on the market.”

Three plots have already been sold subject to contract with the remaining plots being marketed by estate agent William H Brown.

Mr Valentine added: “All of our sites are a revolutionary design which are not only built to last but are built to save money in the long-run as well.

"That’s what makes them perfect for first-time buyers and why it was of paramount importance to us that the properties were on the scheme.”
