How this lifesaving hero celebrated his 100th birthday during lockdown

A Bury man has celebrated his 100th birthday in lockdown.

Sam Fletcher couldn’t spend the day with his family but received a special phone call from Bury mayor Trevor Holt via video chat.

His grandchildren came to his window to wish him well but couldn't come into see him due to the current lockdown restrictions.

Sam said one of the most memorable events of his life took place at Belfast Harbour in 1941.

He was stationed in the Royal Navy when he jumped into the water to save the life of a painter who had fallen off the gangway.

He even received a letter of thanks from the company the man worked for.

Kevin Winch, owner of Home Instead, which cares for Sam, said: “All of us at Home Instead would like to send a heartfelt birthday wish to Sam as he marks his 100th year.

“We know that his family is very disappointed that they can’t see him and are planning a proper celebration when the lockdown is lifted.”
