What winter World Cup means for Nottingham Forest and Championship

The EFL campaign is set for a July start next season due to the upcoming winter World Cup, it has been reported.

Next year’s World Cup will take place in Qatar in November and December rather than June and July to avoid the high summer temperatures in the Middle East.

That will have a knock-on effect to the domestic season in Europe and discussions have been underway for some time over the scheduling of the 2022/23 season.

And Sky Sports has reported that the start of EFL season will brought forward a week to July 30, 2022.

They add the Championship will be paused from November 13 before resuming once the group stage of the World Cup has been completed.

League One and League Two are set to play through the tournament, despite the fact some players from third and fourth tiers clubs could be on duty for their countries in Qatar.

The Premier League will reportedly pause on November 13 and resume on Boxing Day.

The Qatar World Cup is due to run from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
