The cost of a family food shop has soared as cupboard staples surge in price.

While official figures showed inflation rose to 11.1 per cent in October, food inflation has sky-rocketed by a record 16.7 per cent.

Some of the most popular groceries are almost twice as expensive as they were last year, putting further pressure on struggling households.

Dairy products such as milk and butter have had some of the highest price increases and there have also been hefty hikes across everyday items such as sugar, tomato ketchup and jam.

A chicken shortage sparked by an outbreak of bird flu has pushed up the price of eggs by 22.3 per cent and poultry by almost a fifth.

It means the total cost of eight staple items — a loaf of bread, two pints of milk, instant coffee, teabags, 250g of butter, a tin of beans, a chicken and 500g of beef mince — is now over £11 at all six of the UK's main supermarkets.

Supermarket price increases:

Bread and cereals up by 14.4%

Flour up by 28.1%

Pasta and couscous up by 34%

Poultry up by 19.7%

Skimmed milk up by 47.9%

Eggs up by 22.3%

Oils and fats up by 33%

Butter up by 42.1%

Sauces and condiments up by 33.2%

Other household expenses:

Gas up by 128.9%

Petrol up by 18%

Fast food and takeaways up by 12.2%

Car insurance up by 21%
