Met Office weather forecast for the VE Day Bank Holiday weekend

The North East is preparing for the second Bank Holiday weekend in lockdown.

The early May Bank Holiday this year has been moved to Friday to coincide with Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day, which marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to make an announcement on Sunday about easing some coronavirus restrictions but until then, we remain in lockdown.

So what will the weather be like?

Despite some sunny spells across the region, it appears that we will see some rain showers over the weekend.

Here's what the Met Office says:

Thursday

"A cool but clear start with allow for plenty of warm sunny spells to develop quickly in the morning.

"Light winds throughout with clearer skies leaving a rather pleasant afternoon. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

"Staying dry into the evening with the chance of some scattered high cloud developing for a time. Winds remain light throughout and temperatures mild overnight. Minimum temperature 8 °C."

Friday

"Friday will see warm sunny spells and some isolated showers are possible in the afternoon. Fine into the evening. Maximum temperature 19 °C."

Outlook for Saturday to Monday

" Cloudier and windier with some rain on Saturday. Turning much colder by Sunday, with showers, these possibly wintry over the hills. Cloudy periods with isolated coastal showers possible on Monday."
