'Surreal and embarrassing': The US can't believe it's missed the World Cup

The United States might not be known for its soccer prowess, at least when it comes to its men's team, but few could have seen this coming.

It just lost 2-1 to Trinidad and Tobago — population 1.3 million — which means America will miss its first World Cup since 1986.

Former US international Taylor Twellman pretty much summed up America's reaction:

You don't need sound on to see that he's yelling "WHAT ARE WE DOING?!".

Soccer writer Grant Wahl made the same point, just a bit more eloquently:

But outside the US, it was a slightly different story.

Take this reaction from Iceland, which just qualified for its first World Cup with a 2-0 win over Kosovo:

And if you're in Australia, America's misfortune might just make you feel a bit better about our own lacklustre campaign in which we still require a play-off win against Honduras to sneak through.

Until now, the United States' spot at Russia 2018 had looked more or less assured.

So much so that earlier this week, George Quraishi, editor of American soccer magazine Howler, was talking about how America was riding high following its 4-0 thrashing of Panama.

"It's very hard not to qualify from CONCACAF," he told the Totally Football Show, referring to America's qualifying region.

"But the more concerning thing was how we were qualifying — were we just going to scrape through?"

The worries for American soccer are far greater now that it's lost to Trinidad and Tobago, ranked 99th in the world.

The countries that qualified ahead of America in the region were Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, with Honduras progressing to a knockout play-off against the Socceroos.

But plenty of Americans have pointed out that those concerned about the state of soccer in the country might be forgetting something:
