How The Undertaker could still give Kurt Angle the ultimate WWE send-off at WrestleMania 35

To describe Kurt Angle facing Baron Corbin in his retirement match at WrestleMania 35 as disappointing is the understatement of the century.

The announcement of The Lone Wolf as the final opponent for the WWE Hall of Famer was met by near universal disdain from fans last week.

A lot of viewers seemingly don't rate Corbin - despite him being featured prominently on the main roster for three years now - as highly as Vince McMahon .

To date he's won a solitary title, the U.S. Championship, and is most famous for being one of only four men to fail to successfully cash-in his Money in the Bank contract.

Yet whatever you think of Corbin - his ability on the mic and in the ring, effectiveness as a heel, or admittedly fine entrance music - this isn't really about his credentials.

It's about those of Angle, one of the best amateur and professional wrestlers of all time, the man who won an Olympic Gold Medal in 1996 "with a broken freakin' neck".

Not only is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's favourite son a grappling God, he's arguably the greatest all-round performer in WWE history. Oh it's true, it's damn true.

In case you need reminding, Angle took to the art of pro wrestling with lightning quick speed, before enjoying one of the finest rookie years on record.

In just 11 months he collected European and Intercontinental titles, triumphed at King of the Ring, then captured the WWF Championship from The Rock.

Tag team gold, the Hardcore belt and five more world titles followed, all fuelled by his prodigious mix of athletic prowess and stunning sports entertainment skills.

Somehow, Angle was equally adept playing a cowardly villain, an American hero, or a badass wrestling machine. And he could make you laugh - time and time again.

One minute he was taking part in the funniest backstage skits imaginable - the next he was putting on wrestling clinics and headlining WrestleMania.

Injuries, addictions and personal problems saw Angle quit WWE in 2006, before reinventing himself in TNA, only to eventually fall foul of all three issues once more.

Nevertheless, he left TNA having proved himself its finest ever competitor and when he rejoined WWE in March 2017 after defeating his demons, the prospect of a final run was mouthwatering.

Wrestling at TLC and then Survivor Series, it was soon apparent he wasn't what he once was - in fact, after years of serious injuries including major neck problems, he looked physically broken.

Yet at WrestleMania 34, with the help of Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, he gave his tag team partner, the debuting Ronda Rousey, the perfect launchpad for her WWE career.

It was the match of the night and fans dreamed of more of the same from Kurt - dream bouts against the likes of Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins , Finn Balor, maybe even Cesaro.

However, save for a strong showing versus Dolph Ziggler at Crown Jewel and a star-making loss to Drew McIntyre on Raw in the UK last autumn, he was stuck feuding with Corbin.

Since the match with his longtime rival over the management of Raw was revealed, bouts against worthy adversaries have been booked, including AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Rey Mysterio.

But the question still remains, is the 50-year-old legend really going to bring the curtain down on his glittering career on April 7 against a slowly improving, mid-card talent at best?

The Undertaker posts cryptic message over WWE return ahead of WrestleMania 35

Angle should be mentioned in the same breath as his storied foes, from 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and The Rock, to Shawn Michaels and Triple H, or Brock Lesnar and John Cena .

So why isn't a performer of that calibre giving him the ultimate send-off? Rocky retired Austin. Michaels retired Ric Flair. In turn, The Undertaker retired HBK. And HHH will retire Batista.

The rumour remains that Cena, who is still not booked to be a part of the celebrations in New Jersey next weekend, could emerge to provide a perfect swansong for The Olympic Hero.

The 16-time world champion debuted on SmackDown back in 2002 by answering an open challenge from Angle. Now, so the thinking goes, their story could finally come full circle.

Yet there's another icon, currently not scheduled to compete, whose legend eclipses even that of 'Big Match John'. A man with whom Kurt once waged the WWE match of the year.

I'm talking of course about The Undertaker and a classic bout at No Way Out in February 2006, the background to which could have changed the course of wrestling history.

Everyone knows that The Deadman's undefeated streak at the Showcase of the Immortals came to a shock end at the hands of the Beast Incarnate at WrestleMania 30 in 2014.

You may be aware however that Kurt has claimed on multiple occasions that he, not Brock Lesnar, could have been the person to clinch that honour, some eight years previously.

Becky Lynch responds to claims Rob Gronkowski will join WWE

In fact, he first revealed this in an exclusive interview with this very writer, for the sadly missed Power Slam magazine, during a candid chat in the summer of 2011.

He said: "I'll tell you a little known story about the streak. In 2006 I broke my neck again. I was champion and I talked to Vince about still letting me wrestle while I recovered.

"I had a match with Taker at No Way Out, but a month before we had a warm-up match. It was such a great match that Taker went to Vince and said 'can we have this match at WrestleMania, not at No Way Out, and have Kurt win and break my undefeated streak'.

"He was willing to have it at Mania and lose because he knew what kind of match we would have. He'd never had that kind of WrestleMania match he wanted, until maybe Shawn Michaels a couple of years ago.

"I thought 'wow, that's asking a lot'. I was very taken aback by Taker asking that. He said 'Kurt, you're the best, if anyone is going to have that WrestleMania match with me it will be you', but Vince McMahon said no.

"That match at No Way Out usually had low buyrates because it was a month before WrestleMania, but it was a classic, and I think we set a record for the number of re-buys, because people found out how good the match was and wanted to order it afterwards. I have nothing but respect for Taker."

That respect is clearly shared by The Phenom, who at the age of 54 is surely preparing to hang up his own boots in the not-too-distant future. If the Mania showdown they have both long-desired is to be fulfilled, then it's now or never.

After all, what better way to bid farewell to Angle than by having him make short work of Corbin, but as he celebrates, the lights go out and an unmistakable gong signals a second clash, 13 years in the making?

The only alternative has to see Kurt - frustrated by the all-too easy manner of his victory - issue one last open challenge, to be met once again by a dose of 'ruthless aggression'.

But while Cena could give him that 'WrestleMania moment', a long overdue encounter with The Undertaker would be even more special.
