A working group is to be set up to consider the legacy of the slave trade in West Lothian.
West Lothian’s Council Executive agreed to establish the group which will also provide an update on activity undertaken to date to support the raising of awareness of the legacy of the slave trade locally.
Council officers will work with the Race Forum and other key stakeholders in furthering this work over the coming months.
In October, as part of the Black History Month celebrations the Race Forum and the Fair Justice System for Scotland Group (FJSS) held events with Sir Geoff Palmer speaking on the subject of slavery, colonialism and connection to the Black Lives Matter movement.
Leader of West Lothian Council, Councillor Lawrence Fitzpatrick, said: “It’s an important issue and the council is committed to further understanding the legacy of slavery, colonialism and its impact on communities in West Lothian.
"The development of a working group will provide a mechanism to advise and collaborate on the issues of historical racial injustice, prejudice and discrimination and to provide an update on activity undertaken to date to support the raising of awareness of the legacy of the slave trade in West Lothian.”
