How the rules for Wetherspoons pubs will change if Leeds goes into Tier 3

With West Yorkshire facing the potential of going under the strictest current coronavirus restrictions, there will be significant changes to how pubs are allowed to operate.

Currently, pubs in nearby South Yorkshire, which is under the 'very high risk' tier 3, cannot open unless they serve a 'substantial meal'.

But what constitutes a 'substantial meal'? Can you have an alcoholic drink with my meal? Or can you pop into a pub that serves substantial meals just for a pint?

The government says that a 'substantial meal' is 'the sort of meal that you would expect to have as a midday meal or an evening meal'.

Clearly, a bag of crisps is not a substantial meal neither is a plate of chips, a pie or a sausage roll.

However, a pie or Cornish pasty served with chips would probably constitute a substantial meal if it was served on a plate, on a table.

Wetherspoons pubs, of which there are 12 across Leeds, serve breakfast from 8am and then offer a full food menu from 11.30am.

So yes, Wetherspoons pubs can stay open and you can have an alcoholic drink as long as it is ordered with your meal.

And no, you can't pop into the pub just for a pint.
