How the Premier League could be restructured for Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and rivals

Plans for the European Super League have fallen flat on their face but it's merely the latest battle in the long war that is rumbling on regarding proposed changes to the game.

Whether it's a 39th match being played abroad, relegation play-offs or increased TV coverage, few weeks go by in a year where some sort of grand scheme isn't being touted.

Changes to the core of the game that would impact the English football pyramid will certainly be strongly opposed, but what are some other alterations that would be more accepted?

We've taken a dive into a number of potential concepts to have a look, ranging from the good, the bad to the rather ridiculous.

50+1 ownership

This week, the Football Supporters' Association hit out at the 'cabal of billionaire owners' and called for something similar to Germany's 50+1 rule to be implemented within the UK to stop something like this occurring again.

The likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are partly fan-owned, with fans having the majority power when it comes to voting rights.

It was noticeable that no German clubs were among the 12 breakaway sides in the Super League.

Such a move would hand the clubs back to the fans, many of whom have been forced out, and snatch the control away from the billionaires who have made it quite evident they care for little other than cash in their back pockets.

However, implementing such a set-up could prove to be a legal minefield and any changes in this manner are unlikely to occur anytime soon.

Netflix-style subscriptions

In the United States, the NFL has its own streaming service for live coverage - providing fans the opportunity to watch every match, and original programming, for a price of around $99 a year - considerably less than annual subscriptions in the UK cost.

Adopting this approach would allow the Premier League to have greater control over their broadcasting, would reduce piracy and having action available on-demand would appeal to the vast majority of supporters.

Again though, changes are unlikely to occur anytime soon due to the long contracts the Premier League has signed with the likes of Sky Sports, BT Sport and Amazon Prime.

Matches abroad

Roll back the clock a few years and the big talk was the introduction of a 39th Premier League match that would be played in venues across the world, allowing the league to take their product to fans in Africa, Australia, the United States and Asia.

Understandably, these proposals were significantly opposed but there has been a number of occasions where matches involving other European sides have travelled elsewhere - including the Spanish Super Cup.

If this were to be introduced in England, it would likely be something like the Community Shield, rather than a league game, but would certainly be controversial.

Relegation play-off

Germany is a prime example of a relegation play-off, where one of the teams near the bottom of the Bundesliga plays one of the sides near the top of the second division, with the winner earning the right to play in the top-flight the following season.

An introduction like this would likely be opposed by the EFL, understandably, but there could be some tweaks - potentially seeing the side third-bottom in the Premier League play the side fourth-bottom, with the winner staying up.

Fairness is a bit of an issue in this area though as one of the sides could be many, many points ahead of the other, which would make the whole campaign rather meaningless. It would raise a lot of cash though, so don't be surprised if somebody throws this idea into the ring.
