How the players Tottenham failed to sign in the summer have performed this season

Tottenham Hotspur did plenty of business in the summer transfer window, but inevitably there were some players who slipped through the net for Daniel Levy and Jose Mourinho.

Spurs were linked with a host of players throughout the delayed window, some of which seemed more realistic than others.

In the end, the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale were brought in to improve Mourinho's squad, with Tottenham starting the season well and the new men hitting the ground running.

But they were not the only names on the Portuguese coach's shortlist.

With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at the players Tottenham missed out on, and how they’ve fared so far this season.

Milan Skriniar

The Inter Milan defender has been typically sturdy and imposing at the back, though his side’s start to the Serie A campaign has been less convincing.

Antonio Conte’s team are seventh, with 11 goals conceded from their opening seven games.

Skriniar continues to impress, though, and was excellent for Slovakia as they beat Northern Ireland in last week’s Euro 2020 qualifying play-off final.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Spurs reignite their interest for the 25-year-old soon.

Nicolo Zaniolo

Tottenham were linked with one of Europe’s most in-demand youngsters in the summer, though Zaniolo has since seen his development hindered by a serious knee injury.

The 21-year-old has not featured for Roma this season and is not expected to make his return until March or April next year.

Arkadiusz Milik

In their pursuit of a striker to provide cover for Harry Kane, Tottenham were believed to be interested in Napoli forward Milik.

Instead, they opted to bring in Benfica’s Carlos Vinicius on an initial loan, though he has played only a bit-part role so far.

That might tempt Spurs to revisit a potential deal for Milik, who is believed to be seeking an exit ahead of the January transfer window.

He has been restricted to a handful of appearances for Poland this season, clearly deemed surplus to requirements at Napoli.

Ivan Perisic

Mourinho is a long-time admirer of Perisic, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich from Inter.

At 31, he is no longer one for the future, but the Croatia international remains a quality player at the highest level and was linked with a switch to north London in the summer.

Had Spurs not re-signed Bale, Perisic might have been the next best option. But he stayed at Inter, where he has since made seven Serie A appearances, scoring once and providing one assist.

David Brooks

The young Welshman was on the radar of both Tottenham and Manchester United, though the hefty price tag he would have commanded likely proved slightly off-putting.

There’s no doubt that the 23-year-old is a talent, though, and it seems unlikely that he will stay with Bournemouth in the Championship for much longer.

Brooks has only recently returned from injury but opened his account for the season with two goals against Birmingham earlier this month.

And he was on the scoresheet again last weekend as Wales beat Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Nations League.

Federico Bernadeschi

Bernardeschi always seemed a somewhat left-field target given the mixed reviews from Juventus fans.

The Italy midfielder has had plenty of critics over recent seasons, and remains a fringe player for the Serie A club, starting just once this season and making a further five appearances as a substitute.
