How the Newcastle United players learned Steve Bruce had left the club

Newcastle United players were told in a group meeting by the club’s top brass that Steve Bruce had left the club by “mutual consent”.

The Magpies continued their preparations for the Crystal Palace game at Benton under the guidance of caretaker boss Graeme Jones.

But the club said tonight: “Steve Bruce's two-year reign as Newcastle United's head coach came to an end on Wednesday morning, with the 60-year-old leaving St. James' Park by mutual consent.

“But, after being informed of the news in person by Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, the players continued to prepare for Saturday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace under the guidance of Graeme Jones - who will lead the team on an interim basis - and fellow coaches Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.”

Martin Dubravka was back in training while Paul Dummett was also on the grass again after long-term injuries.
