How the new world rugby rankings look as South Africa reign supreme, England stall and Wales rise one place

There we have it.

The 2019 Rugby World Cup is complete and we have new world champions in South Africa.

After a jam-packed six weeks in Japan, Rassie Erasmus' Springboks emerged victorious after the final against Eddie Jones' men, beating them by 32-12 in Yokohama.

And, after the World Cup has ended, we have a new running order of how teams stand in the world rugby rankings.

South Africa are top with their world champions status, climbing up from the fourth position they held heading to Japan, while the All Blacks remain level with their pre-tournament position but England are ranked third despite their silver-medal status.

Wales, who headed into the tournament ranked fifth, climb one place to fourth, in keeping with their tournament outcome, while Ireland - who were knocked out at the quarter-finals - have dropped from top to fifth across the course of the tournament.

Further down the table, Japan have climbed two spots after an incredible journey as coach Jamie Joseph led them to beat Ireland and make it to the knockout stages.

Here's how the rankings now look, compared to how they were entering the tournament.

  1. South Africa (94.19 points) - up from fourth heading into the Rugby World Cup
  2. New Zealand (92.11) - level with pre-World Cup standing
  3. England (88.82) - level
  4. Wales (85.02) - up one from fifth
  5. Ireland (84.45) - down from top
  6. Australia (81.90) - level
  7. France (80.88) - up one
  8. Japan (79.28) - up two
  9. Scotland (79.23) - down two
  10. Argentina (78.31) - up one
  11. Fiji (76.21) - down two
  12. Italy (72.04) - up two
  13. Tonga (71.44) - up two
  14. Georgia (71.26) - down two

Samoa are ranked 15th now while USA have dropped to 17th after heading into the global showpiece tournament at 15th.
