How the influence of Victor Orta's mentor is being felt at Leeds United

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has spoken out about how much he learned from Sevilla's director of football Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, more commonly known as Monchi, during his time with the Spanish giants.

Orta, who joined Sevilla in 2006, spending 10 years with the La Liga club, has been key in improving United's recruitment drive since arriving at Elland Road over two years ago.

The Spaniard, these days, is considered to be one of the very best in the business and laid the foundations to almost instigate the Whites' return to the Premier League last season.

In a recent exclusive interview with Off the Pitch, Orta opened up on his time at Sevilla, revealing he learned a lot from Monchi's approach and methods.

'This culture can reduce the gap'

Orta said: “What can I say about buy cheap and sell expensive. Monchi changed a club with this characteristic.

"This culture can reduce the gap… to try and build a club in politics of selling players but only if you’re really sure you can get the same level as the player who is leaving."

Nowadays, the data and analysis on offer to clubs who are seeking a deal for a player is off the scale. Clubs can access a great deal of information on players and that makes jobs like Orta's all the more easier.

Orta added: "In such a climate of competitiveness, it was imperative for clubs to work out how this knowledge could be most useful to them."
