How the humble camel is transforming Somali farming

  • Somalia's traditional camel milk industry is undergoing a significant modernisation, with new commercial farms emerging near the capital, Mogadishu.
  • Beder Camel Farm, a pioneer in the transformation, has implemented modern veterinary care and feeding practices, doubling the daily milk yield per camel.
  • The farm operates Somalia's first camel milk yoghurt factory. Sold in urban supermarkets, the product offers significant nutritional benefits, including lower lactose and higher vitamin content.
  • Managed by Dr Abdirisak Mire Hashi, the initiative aims to preserve Somali heritage while creating jobs and improving nutrition, employing nearly 200 full-time staff.
  • The Somali government is actively supporting the industry's growth through new policies and investment plans, aiming to develop the full value chain of camel products.
